That blockbuster ad “The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches” got me started. Hooked me real deep and I’ve been addicted ever since. I still have my tattered copy of Joe’s book in my archives. The cover is long gone and the perfect binding has been replaced with hot melt glue. It’s ugly but still intact. Joe’s tutorial on how to write an ad is still one of the best. It’s simple, short, sweet and filled with wisdom that belies its brevity. I discovered Joe Karbo as a newly wed while living at my parents home with my new (now ex-wife) waiting to move into our first one-bedroom apartment. Money was scarce and I was scared stiff wondering how I was going to make my way in the world and at least become rich if not famous. I was selling real estate at the time. I had recently dropped out of college because I was impatient and a bit of an outsider. I was also a Vietnam Vet who was older than the norm and I didn’t blend well with the mood on campus. You have to understand the historical context of Joe’s ad. It was truly a breakthrough concept at the time and when it hit the streets it became a phenomena, which still wields a subtle influence to this day. I probably read Joe’s ad a couple of times before I clipped out the coupon, filled it out and sent my check. I remember the day it arrived. Sat down with a note pad and began to read it. I was disappointed at first. If you are not familiar with the book the first half has to do with re-programming your mind, affirmations and the like. This was new to me but I followed the advice and did the exercises just the way Joe outlined them. The second half of the book was about direct response marketing. That book was my foundation. It was my launch pad. Next came a subscription to Chase Revels Insider’s Report (see his ad in this collection) I was one of the first subscribers Insiders Report was a little gem. It high lighted two unique business ventures per issue and detailed how to set them up and make them work. The Insiders Report morphed into Entrepreneur Magazine, but it started with a simple ad in the Wall Street Journal, which is the ad I responded too. I still have a few of my original Insider Report issues, which I keep as a warm reminder of my salad days. As an aside, I actually started one of the businesses Chase featured. It was a parking lot striping business. I was successful. Yes, it was hard work but I was making cash and learning a lot. Eventually I got tired of the physical labor and running around and sold the equipment to another hustler like me. Most of the businesses in “Insiders Report” were weird and whacky. The appeal was getting information about a profitable concept before it became general knowledge. You could take a concept that was successful in another part of the country and copy that success using the inside intelligence Chase gathered in legal but surreptitious ways. I think that Black Market kind of approach appealed to me because uncommon knowledge was the key to success, or so I thought. That Headline “Who’s Making a Bundle” was a whopper. Sure did make Chase Revel a living legend. I continued to forage for information. Going deeper, deeper and deeper until felt I could go no deeper. Most of what I was interested in was how to sell more, sell better and sell faster. It paid off because eventually I earned about $500,000 in sales commissions in two years selling of all things Windows! I was a sales super star and I suppose it goes back to that “Lazy Mans” ad from Joe Karbo. I was smart but kind of dumb because I really didn’t understand that the marketing was fueling my passion and that the marketing was where I should focus. I would read everything and anything I could get my eyes on. I’d sneak off to the Detroit Public Library and dig up dusty old sales/advertising/marketing books they kept buried in the basement. I’d sit there for hours reading, taking notes and having a wonderful time discovering all this remarkable stuff. The Detroit Library also had a great collection of business and trade magazines (sadly no longer true) and I went to school devouring them all. I was also a subscriber to a lot of hard asset newsletters like Gary North’s Remnant Review and The Ruff Times. Howard Ruff introduced me to Jay Abraham with a sales letter promoting “Your Marketing Genius at Work”. That was around 1985. I didn’t subscribe but still have that letter which is a classic. This fellow Jay Abraham sounded awesome but I was focused on selling. Marketing just didn’t compute with me at the time. Like I said I was smart but dumb. If I had only subscribed I could have saved a few years. Oh well. The tipping point came a several years later. It was Gary North’s cassette taped interview of Jay Abraham promoting the protщgщ seminars. I ordered “Marketing Genius” after listening to that interview. Eventually I realized it was a joint venture ploy Jay used with Gary. When I heard that tape I finally got it. Like Jay says we all have this “marketing mindset”. You just have to shift your perspective a little bit to see the whole picture. That tape is a permanent part of my collection because it had such a profound influence on my thinking. That tape is a pure selling piece for Jay’s first protщgщ trainings yet it contained valuable information I used to make money for myself. That’s kind of neat isn’t it? A sales promotion tool that really contains valuable information you can validate. The hook was really set then. The Gary North strategy was brilliant and is a prime of example of a back end offer to a customer list. It was Jay at his best displaying his adroit articulation and using the famous host parasite tactic After hearing Jay I realized I knew marketing because I had been doing it the hard way one on one as a salesman. Now all I had to do was redeploy it in a different way. Next came Gary Halbert. I subscribed to his newsletter the instant I found out about him. He was the outlaw, maniac. If you could look past the messenger you could get the valuable message. What sticks with me about Gary to this day is “Remote Control Selling.” Say no more. Finally I had a way to sell with out having to do it in person. Along the way I saved a lot of things, but not enough. Most of my collection is bits and pieces of things I just couldn’t part with. Primarily I keep them as reminders to gauge how far I have come and how far I still have to go. I started collecting ads intuitively because I sensed there was something about them that I needed to know. But like I said, I was just too dumb to know what at the time. I thank my unconscious mind for helping me out. The next piece of the puzzle concerns linguistics. Since I was a pretty good salesman I was always looking for ways to get better. Words played a big part of that so I delved into the psychology of influence with words. Influence with words is hypnosis. It’s very difficult to hypnotize someone who speaks Greek by talking to them in English. Hmm, my world was changing and I just kept following the carrot. I was shocked. Little did I realize my sales victims were in a heightened hypnotic trance. An emotional state was a trance state. We do things in a heightened emotional state that we don’t quite understand. After we do them we think there is some logical reason so we make one up. Really we all know (those of us who understand) Emotion is the reason we act and the logic is just a way to justify our irrational behavior. The linguistics and trance state were the last piece of my personal puzzle. It was a bit scary to realize I (anyone for that matter) could get people to do things through subtle almost undetectable manipulation. I’m very careful how I use it because if I wanted I could really steam roller over people one on one. I don’t do that. In fact I avoid it like a bad virus. It’s no fun when you know what you are doing while you do it. I don’t like one on one selling anymore because I am so aware of what I’m doing. It’s much more difficult to master the art of influence with words because it’s not natural. Talking is natural. Writing is not. If you are not a born writer or surrounded by family of writers or influenced early in some way, it’s my opinion writing is a difficult skill to acquire. That’s one reason why I think swipe files like these classic ads are so valuable. If you put in the time and work with these proven winners you can acquire the neural connections to make yourself a decent copywriter. All it takes is a little passion and time. Albert Einstein supposedly said “anyone can become an expert at anything by simply devoting fifteen minutes a day to acquiring a new skill”. In a very short while you can become a virtual expert on anything you choose. It’s common sense yet we overlook the obvious. This is a valuable marketing lesson and most of the great ads are pure common sense approaches. So if you need a little encouragement to devour these classic ads you now have it. Think about it, we are surrounded by words. These little thought particles called words can be strung into a secret code that makes us do things like sending money to complete strangers. Words into Cash. Sounds corny but that’s what it’s all about. If you are in business it’s all about counting the money. Why make excuses or try and obfuscate the point. The beauty is you can never really master the mystery of converting words into cash. You can be successful but that success only fuels you to improve the art and science. The ads on this site help you imprint the patterns and models of experts. You get good by studying excellence. Model the experts. Step into their minds and then step out into your own voice. Pretty soon you’ll be stringing together words that can make money or change the world. You’ll also become a pretty sharp cookie because you’ll instantly recognize the obvious signs of influence others are trying to use against you. You can choose to be influenced or you can choose to ignore it. Either way, you have a lot more control in business, in personal affairs and life in general. Did you get it? Your ability to discover how you are influenced makes you a better seller and also protects you from it. So I pass these ads along as supreme examples of influence. The secret to business success is selling the widget. If you can create the ad, web site, or sales letter you are on easy street. Consider the few examples on this site as fuel to reach your goals. And please enjoy the ride. Start your own swipe files and save the best because at some time in your life you’ll want to look back on reflect how it all started. And finally, pass it along.
